Protecting America Initiative Applauds Governor Abbott for Cracking Down on Chinese Medtech Devices
Governor Greg Abbott (TX) calls for state audits of
medtech devices connected to the CCP
Protecting America Initiative, a coalition of concerned Americans and public policy experts dedicated to combating the growing influence of Communist China in the United States, today praised Texas Governor Greg Abbott for taking decisive action to secure the state’s medical infrastructure against technological threats from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
In a new directive, Governor Abbott ordered the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and other state health agencies to immediately review and mitigate cybersecurity risks associated with Chinese-manufactured patient monitoring devices. Governor Abbott also committed to propose legislation in the next session to protect Texans’ medical data from foreign hostile actors like Communist China.
Chad Wolf, former Acting Secretary of DHS and senior advisor to PAI, applauded Governor Abbott’s leadership in a statement:
“Texas is once again leading the way in protecting its citizens from the CCP’s pervasive digital reach. Governor Abbott’s directive ensures that Texas will not allow its hospitals to become a playground for Chinese espionage. This is the gold standard for state-level action, and we encourage every governor in America to follow the Lone Star State’s lead.”
The push for medical security aligns with the Trump Administration’s ongoing Section 232 national security investigation into medical equipment imports, which found CCP-linked devices embedded in U.S. government-funded research labs.
BACKGROUND:
The Protecting America Initiative has taken numerous steps to expose how Chinese-made medical device companies could leak the patient data of Americans to the CCP.
PAI launched an ad campaign thanking Florida AG James Uthmeier for taking action to crack down on illicit Chinese vapes, CCP-linked medtech companies, and other CCP threats to Floridians.
In December, PAI released an ad campaign “Do No Harm” in Florida and Texas, calling to get Chinese-made devices out of U.S. hospitals to safeguard the data privacy of American patients.
PAI rolled out a report detailing the threat that Chinese medical devices pose to American patients. In the report, PAI highlights how the healthcare sector faced more cyberthreats in 2024 than any other critical infrastructure industry, largely due to CCP influence.
PAI released two polls in November that found broad support amongst Floridians and Texans for lawmakers who address U.S. dependence on Chinese medical devices.
