We’ve previously written about the efforts President Trump and his administration have taken to crack down on illegal Chinese vaping products, the producers of which have been skirting U.S. law to sell unsanctioned and untested products to American consumers. Tens of millions of dollars’ worth of illegal Chinese vape products have been found and seized at a time between the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). 

China is the leading supplier of the chemical ingredients used to make fentanyl, a highly addictive and lethal drug that killed almost 48,000 Americans in 2024 alone. That fact has been well documented for years. Policymakers in Washington and Americans might be surprised, however, to learn that most of the illegal and illicit products coming into America flow through Canada and Mexico on their way here. 

At the end of August, the House passed the Protecting American Industry and Labor from International Trade Crimes Act of 2026, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Representative Ashley Hinson (R, IA-2)that would give the U.S. new tools to combat trade-related crimes. Motivated by Chinese companies that abuse our nation’s trade laws in order to get a leg up over domestic companies, the bill would go a long way towards leveling the playing field and enforcing existing statutory trade crimes.

In 2025, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about three cybersecurity vulnerabilities found in a connected medical device that threatened patient safety and privacy. According to the notice, three cybersecurity vulnerabilities were found in Contec CMS8000 patient monitors that could “allow unauthorized actors to bypass cybersecurity controls, gaining access to and potentially manipulating the device.” The manufacturer of the device – Contec Medical Systems Co., Ltd. – is based in Qinhuangdao, China. 

The United States is the world’s leader when it comes to creating breakthrough cures and life-saving prescription drugs. Maintaining that lead is a critical national security issue. Simply put, Americans cannot be dependent on an adversary like China to provide us with medicine.

In May, the House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced the Motor Vehicle Modernization Act out of committee to the full House. The legislation contains a provision that on its face purports to protect the U.S. automotive industry from foreign adversaries; however, a backroom deal exception written into the provision would allow driverless vehicles manufactured in China into the United States, undermining national security. Here’s how.

Fortunately, the Trump Administration has taken aggressive action to stop the weaponization of our supply chains. Now, leaders in Texas are stepping up to ensure that business as usual with Beijing doesn't come at the cost of patient safety or national security.
