Protecting America Initiative Applauds FL AG Uthmeier For Cracking Down on Chinese MedTech Devices Over CCP Ties

Florida AG Uthmeier is demanding audits from Mindray North America, United Imaging, MicroPort, and other Chinese medtech companies over ties to the CCP

Protecting America Initiative, a coalition of concerned Americans and public policy experts dedicated to combating the growing influence of Communist China in the United States, today praised Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier for taking action to crack down on Chinese medical technology companies in a new letter, announced at a press conference this morning.

The Florida Attorney General announced his office will be demanding audits from Chinese medical technology companies like Mindray North America, United Imaging, and MicroPort and disclosures of their ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

AG Uthmeier also announced the launch of the CHINA (Consumer Harm from International Nefarious Actors) Prevention Unit aimed at countering CCP threats at a press conference today in West Palm Beach, Florida. There, he told Floridians that “This China Prevention Unit is going to be hard-charging, operating on full cylinders. We will be sending a letter today to numerous Chinese companies, or Chinese-connected companies in the health tech space, again, to protect the health data of Americans.”

This first-in-the-nation initiative will focus on investigating and litigating “companies who are unlawfully sharing data with China and other foreign nations, putting Floridians’ data at risk.”

Chad Wolf, former Acting Secretary of DHS and senior advisor to PAI, applauded AG Uthmeier’s leadership in a statement:

“Florida is leading the way on protecting its citizens from CCP threats, and other states should take note. No foreign adversary should ever possess, process, or profit from Americans’ personal information. The work of Attorney General James Uthmeier to protect Floridians’ personal data is drawing a hard line: if your products, platforms, or devices send Americans’ data to hostile jurisdictions, you will be held accountable. This is the standard every state should adopt.”

BACKGROUND:

  • The Protecting America Initiative has taken numerous steps to expose how Chinese-made medical device companies could leak the patient data of Americans to the CCP.

  • In December, PAI released the campaign “Do No Harm,” calling to get Chinese-made devices out of U.S. hospitals to safeguard the data privacy of American patients.

    1. PAI recently rolled out a report detailing the threat that Chinese medical devices pose to American patients. In the report, PAI highlights how the healthcare sector faced more cyberthreats in 2024 than any other critical infrastructure industry, largely due to CCP influence.

    2. In October, PAI launched the six-figure ad “Monitoring,” which aired on TV and digital in Washington, DC, and highlighted the serious threat posed by Chinese-manufactured medical devices and the risk of sensitive U.S. patient data going straight to Beijing.

    3. Later in October, PAI expanded the ad campaign highlighting the national security threat of Chinese-made medical devices to Florida.

    4. PAI released two polls in November that found broad support amongst Floridians and Texans for lawmakers who address U.S. dependence on Chinese medical devices.
